Uniformity of successive populations of an alpine grasshopper with a two-year diapause.

چکیده
-UNIFORMITY OF SUCCESSIVE POPULATIONS OF AN ALPINE GRASSHOPPER WITH A TWO YEAR DIAPAUSE. Aeropedellus clavatus (Thomas), an abundant grasshopper in the alpine tundra of Colorado, has a two-year diapause. This suggests the possibility of two distinct populations in successive years. Statistical analysis of samples from three alpine localities on Mount Evans, Colorado, collected in 1958, 1959, and 1960, demonstrate that samples from successive years are as much alike as are those from 1958 and 1960. Successive populations are therefore essentially uniform. Apparently all individuals do not have a two-year diapause, a few eggs hatching after only one winter while a larger number, probably, go through three winters before hatching.-Gordon Alexander, 765 14th street, Boulder, CO 80302. A 20-year Record of Alpine Grasshopper Abundance, with Interpretations for Climate Change
A 20-year capture-recapture study of alpine grasshoppers spanned three distinct sequences of abundance, featuring in turn dis-equilibrium, equilibrium and secondary cyclic equilibrium. This succession of population patterns in the most abundant species, Paprides nitidus, retained high stability between generations. It arose via superimposed life-cycle pathways and adaptive responses between gra...
متن کاملOptimal diapause strategies of a grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes
Previous analyses of diapause in insects have most often focused on the timing of the switch from non-diapausing to diapausing offspring in bivoltine populations and have assumed that diapause is irreversible or that the insect cannot survive winter if not in diapause. Many insects exhibit more flexibility in their life cycles, such as the age at which diapause begins, and facultative diapause,...
متن کاملPrevalence and Molecular Identification of Nematode and Dipteran Parasites in an Australian Alpine Grasshopper (Kosciuscola tristis)
In alpine Australia, Orthoptera are abundant, dominant herbivores, important prey species, and hosts for parasites and parasitoids. Despite the central role of orthopterans in alpine ecosystems, the impact of parasites on orthopteran populations is under-explored. In this study we describe the relationship between parasite prevalence and host sex, body size and year of collection. We accessed a...
متن کاملHeart Rate Variability in an Elite Female Alpine Skier: a Case Study
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to assess the heart rate variability (HRV) during off-snow and on-snow training in an elite female alpine ski racer. Methods. Using a case study design, a single elite female alpine ski racer (25 years old; 175.6 cm; 69.9 kg) was recruited from the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. Training load was obtained using the sessional rating of perceived exertion met...
متن کاملInfluence of Weather Variables and Plant Communities on Grasshopper Density in the Southern Pampas, Argentina
A study was conducted to evaluate the influence of weather (precipitation and temperature) and plant communities on grasshopper density over a 14-year period (1996-2009) in Benito Juárez County, Southern Pampas, Argentina. Total density strongly varied among plant communities. Highest values were registered in 2001 and 2003 in highly disturbed pastures and in 2002 and 2009 in halophilous grassl...
